Our beautiful salt and pepper mills needed a nice place to rest when not in use. Since salt and pepper also fall down directly on the table we decided to make a fitted wooden rest ...
The rest is made out of dark walnut wood to contrast with the bright wood of the mills. To get the necessary thickness we used three laser cut layers of wood.
It helps to have a lot of clamps. Fortunately the stack was thin enough so that we could use some makeshift ones (paper clips).
To give the appearance of a wood block, we sanded all sides to even the layers out. A fine grit sandpaper was used to prepare the surface for applying the finish. Linseed oil gave the appearance we wanted and works well with the mills.
